Have you heard of a Gua Sha and are wondering what the heck it is and why it’s the next biggest trend in the holistic beauty space?
This tool is made of crystal, most commonly seen is rose quartz, that originates back to ancient Chinese practices!
Although the gua sha was originally used for lymphatic drainage, many people use it for helping with muscle tension in their faces, especially the jaw area, as well as decreasing the looks of fine lines.
Now, I haven’t used one long enough to know whether it helps with fine lines but I must say, as someone who clenches their jaw at night and wears a nightguard, I love my gua sha for helping with muscle tension in my jaw.
It’s one of those love/hate relationships, kind of like when you use your foam roller.
Your Lymphatic System
So let’s get back to the main reason it was originally used which was lymphatic drainage. First, what does that mean, and secondly why is that important?
Let me break it down for you a little more!
Your lymphatic system is part of your immune system and contains things like our lymph nodes, lymph fluid, and so on. By supporting your lymphatic system you are therefore supporting immune health which I think we could all use a little help with!
Most people are familiar with lymph nodes which are found in different areas od our body such as our armpits and groin. Then we have lymph which is a clear substance that is a carrier for white blood cells.
The thing with our lymphatic system is that it doesn’t push lymph throughout our body automatically so it’s important that we do things in order to help get it draining such as using a gua sha and a dry brush, drinking water, moving our bodies and even trying a lymphatic drainage massage if that is your thing.

Using your Gua Sha:
You may order one of these and wonder how this flat piece of crystal is supposed to help which is fair because although its a simple looking tool, there are actually techniques you should follow. There are tons of tutorials online and different methods for different goals but I included a couple of good introductory ones below to get you started.
One thing to keep in mind is that you may want to put the time into watching a few because you don’t want to cause damage by pressing too hard or using your gua sha incorrectly.
Another quick thing to note is that there are different styles of gua shas so don’t be alarmed if yours looks a bit different.
