Many people aren’t aware that the pots, pans, baking dishes, tupperware and utensils they use on a daily basis may be harmful to their health! I am not telling you to through out all your kitchen gear now but to instead consider replacing certain items over time and as your budget allows. One thing you should be mindful of are cuts and scrapes in your frying pans and tupperware. If you have this issue, you may want to consider replacing them for safer options as the coatings can get into your food and bacteria can form.
Here are the main kitchen products that you should look into:
- Frying pans: Frying pans are probably one of the most harmful in terms of toxins. Non-stick pans should be avoided and you should opt for cast iron, ceramic or stainless steel. Non-stick pans leach carcinogens into our food and if they are cut in anyways (which isn’t hard to do), it makes it even worse! Look for pans that are free of POFA and PTFE.
- Tupperware: plastic can leach harmful chemicals like BPA into our food. Some companies do make BPA free containers but glass options are always the best. Pyrex brand makes great snap on lid glass containers. The lids are plastic but the base is glass. The lids also hold very securely and are therefore great for lunches.
- Pots and saucepans: Be sure your pots don’t contain aluminum in the part you are actually putting food into. Also be sure that they don’t contain any non-stick surfaces. Again, stainless steel and ceramic are the way to go!
- Utensils: Although we aren’t suppose to have lead in anything, there have been cases of lead appearing in random items imported into Canada. Cheap utensils may run the risk of contamination and have been known to rust. Avoid getting your utensils from a discount place if you can afford to.
- Cups, mugs, travel mugs: Avoid the plastic unless its BPA free and stick to ceramic and stainless steel.

Spiralized Sweet Potato Egg Skillet
Ingredients:
- 1-2 eggs
- 1/2 large sweet potato spiralized
- 1 tbsp avocado oil
- sea salt and pepper to taste
Directions:
- Add oil to a frying pan on medium heat
- Place the sweet potato in the frying pan and create cut outs for the eggs to go in
- Once the frying pan is hot, add eggs. You can cook them whatever style you please. I prefer sunny side up to let the yolk mix with the sweet potato!
- Cover frying pan and let cook until eggs cook and sweet potato softens
